Samsung ships 8GB moviNAND samples for mobile devices

South Korea – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has begun shipping samples of an 8GB memory chip to major mobile electronics manufacturers. Samsung's high-density moviNAND memory solution consists of four 50nm, 16Gb NAND flash memory, a high-speed MultiMediaCard (MMC) controller and associated firmware. It can store up to 2,000 songs or enough map data to implement GPS and points of interest for the entire western world. In addition, it can also be used with removable media cards to permit unlimited memory expansion.

The moviNAND is 10 percent to 20 percent smaller than other flash-based embedded memory card solutions, but it provides twice the capacity and double the performance of the 4GB version. It also processes data at 52MBps, currently the industry's fastest multimedia card interface. Samsung's moviNAND memory applies the eMMC standard jointly developed by Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) and MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) for embedded flash memory applications.

Samsung forecasts that the global moviNAND market will reach an accumulated sales volume of $4 billion by 2010.

Mass production of Samsung's 8GB moviNAND is scheduled at the end of 2007.
